Blogger has been lovely and I have been a devoted user for some time. But, it's time to start anew. Early spring cleaning.

From now on I will be posting on a new tumblr - Flint & Tinder. The only reason I haven't switched before is because of the lack of commenting - but I think I've figured out a way to do that (maybe, has kinks, workin on it.) and I've also imported all my old blog posts over there. It's just an easier, clean platform to use.

"After observing particular subcultures and ethnic groups, Nikki S. Lee adopts their general style and attitude through dress, gesture, and posture, and then approaches the group in her new guise. She introduces herself as an artist (though not everyone believes her or takes it seriously), and then spends several weeks participating in the group’s routine activities and social events while a friend or member of the group photographs her with an ordinary automatic “snapshot” camera. Lee maintains control of the final image, however, insofar as she chooses when to ask for a picture and edits what photographs will eventually be displayed.

From schoolgirl to senior citizen, punk to yuppie, rural white American to urban Hispanic, Lee’s personas traverse age, lifestyle, and culture. Part sociologist and part performance artist, Lee infiltrates these groups so convincingly that in individual photographs it is difficult to distinguish her from the crowd. However, when photographs from the projects are grouped together, it is Lee’s own Korean ethnicity, drawn like a thread through each scenario, which reveals her subtle ruse."

It would be so demanding to really integrate yourself into a culture, to work to gain acceptance and to be a part of that fully (she would stay as long as it took to be 'accepted', sometimes taking months to do). I imagine you would gain an incredible amount of empathy and understanding along the way.

Last night I had the pleasure of meeting Olimpia Zagnoli, an illustrator from Milan, after her AIGANY talk. Adore her work; she does so much with color. And maybe it's just me, but I really love the roundness of all her characters (almost makes me think to botero...kinda).

At the event she talked a lot on what inspired her growing up, and I was happy to hear her mention Bruno Munari, who I had picked up a book by when I was in Rome - Design as Art, def recommended reading.

Also, the type had to react off of the image. It was probably the most difficult concept restrictions I've had, and I only really liked this page and the cover.

Graduation & Other Things

Wanted to give a small update, since I've been absent, taking a break from the internet to really enjoy the end of school. A few points:

1) I graduated! FIN. It hasn't really hit me yet, but I'm getting nostalgic in strange places, so it's a-comin.

2) Finally having some time to work on projects I've put on hold, like the above preview. I was experimenting with type from fried egg whites, and the whole alphabet should be done pretty soon, just need to finish editing in photoshop. Also working on a small zine-ish piece that I started last year, with illustrations from talented illustrator & dear friend Sam Spina. & drawing more. & so on. Keep an eye out!

Great talk by Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan, the founder of Apartment Therapy, who started the popular blog after teaching grade school. He talks about the importance of having a healthy home atmosphere for individuals and families, and giving back to your community.

"I visited the children at home, I taught them from 1st to 5th grade, and they would show me their home and where they worked...I found over this time that the kids who were coming from homes, what we call good homes, homes that were sort of healthy, organized...not rich, not a rich-poor thing...and who parents who were home for dinner, they did the best."

Happy Earth Day! In celebration, here are some amazing National Park posters illustrated by Charlie Harper, which many of you will probably know. He was a fantastic illustrator from the 50's-70's, working with mostly nature subjects, breaking them down to minimal shapes a la Paul Rand.

These posters really surprised me. First I thought they were new; although the style is still 'retro' (because it legitimately is) there's an aspect about it (not the Helvetica) that feels different than the typical 50's illustration. Especially in the Glacier Bay and Rocky Mountain posters.

Three Things I Did Last Week

So last week, Jessica Hische, a designer/typographer I adore, set up a blog called The Internet Sends Me Cake. It was an open invitation to send her & her studio-mates baked goods in exchange for a cake-judging and link to your work - pretty sweet deal, especially since it's also a way to show my appreciation for her stuff outside the impersonality of an email, etc. I really wanted to, but since SC is so far away, and I didn't want the goods to smoosh or spoil, I sent her a 'Decorate-your-own' kit with different cupcakes and fun toppings (+ a note and infographic explaining what all was in the pack). They arrived safely on Friday, and she wrote a really lovely post about them on the blog - I really appreciate all the kind words, they meant so much! Also awesome were photographs of the decorations (+ puppy! I sent her a polaroid of Jude and I). See them here, along with photos of the pack, as unfortunately I only had a few bad pics of it before it shipped. Made me unbelievably happy.
For those of you who haven't seen her work please go to her website right away and fall in love.

Undefined: Book 5 came out (the magazine I've been interning at)! I was lucky to have the opportunity to design for the article "20 Years of Art in Columbia", and did some collage/illustrations for the inside. My favorite was the opportunity to design the infographic, a timeline addressing important dates in the arts community.

I really love Virginia Woolf, and I've been wanting to design some book covers for a while, so I perused a self-initiated design for her 3 novels which employ the 'stream-of-consciousness' narrative. I gave myself a few restrictions - to keep it minimal, and to allude to the original covers designed by her sister Vanessa Bell. I ended up creating symbols inspired by the covers, and for the description on the back, using a quote which emphasized the underlying theme of each novel.

School Assn. / Savage Shoe Outfitters

Our 4th project in Typography class was to develop an identity system; we drew a profession and an adjective describing it out of a hat to determine our company. Mine was "Ferocious Shoe Salesman". Ouch.

I decided to take the 'ferocious' as a lead-in for an outdoor shoe company. The solution for the logo had to be typographic in nature, so I loosely inked the name and edited it further on the computer. I think the name itself is the only thing I'm not quite happy with (kinda cheez).

We were required to develop a logo, business card, letterhead with envelope. The promotional products are extra - I also included:
Packaging of the shoes - the mesh bag
Packaging for laces - inked on the word
Tags for each
Field Book - for excursions, promotional product.

It's sort of like if Ralph Steadman and Half Moon Outfitters had a baby. Only with less acid.

From 1913 to 1971 five thousand one hundred and twenty one mentally ill patients were cremated on the grounds of the Oregon State Hospital. Their remains were sealed in copper canisters. The canisters were stored in the hospital’s basement until the 1970s when they were moved to a memorial vault underground. The vault was subjected to periodic floods. In 2000 they were removed from their institutional crypt, placed on plain pine shelves in a storeroom, and were left virtually forgotten until David Maisel heard of their existence and photographed them.

The human remains mixed with phosphates, calcium (from the bones), sulfates, and other minerals combined with the corroding acid in the groundwater to form secondary mineral deposits; the resulting color is almost like giving a visual identity to each anonymous patient. Both sad and gorgeous.

Sweet Sakura Tea

Basically cherry tree blossoms (didn't really like it that much as a tea, kind of a weird taste). I adore the packet packaging, that gold and purple are gorgeous. And when you pour water over them they open back up, which is beautiful if not tasty.

Beach House - "Devotion" CD Packaging Concept
This was a project in ARTS245, to create an album cover. I developed it into a full case for my portfolio. The concept was based on items of devotion - a collection of items tagged and dated over the course of a relationship (you can't really see the full scope, but all the items are dated from the 70's with little one-liners on them). The aesthetic carried over from the band's music and style - antiquated, romantic, with a bit of kitsch.

MOUNT FEAR East London Police Statistics for violent crimes 2002-3 (2003)

London-based artist Abigail Renolds has some beautiful work. Mount Fear (above) is a sculpted terrain based on police data from English cities, focusing on a different set of data per city (and different media, depending). Each individual incident adds to height - interesting that the sculpture is a nature-based representation of crime from urban settings.

Below is her series The Universal Now, which takes photos from different time periods (usually from old tourist guides) and folds them so that they cross into each other, like an intersection of space & time (thus the quantum physics-ref name).

These are my mousepaths while working in Illustrator over the last 3 hours, recorded using a Java applet by Anatoly Zenkov. The lines are mousepaths, dots where the mouse has rested for a while. Obviously I'm minimizing a lot, probably to go procrastinate on the web.

These are beautiful, I wish they were buy-able (regardless, I'm sure I couldn't afford them). Project by Gearóid Muldowney's studio Superfolk, born out of research made into traditional materials that could be locally sourced. They're named after animals seen in Ireland's countryside- Pinemartin, Hare, Fox and Sheep - and each tailored for contemporary use (above "Pinemartin" can fit a 12"MacBook Pro, for example) but retaining a link to traditional Irish aesthetic.

An entry to a logo contest in town - for a Hyperbaric Nursing certification program. Edited it from it's original form (prev. in a circle, which fit with the other certification logos).

Speaking of different fonts, just obtained a bazillion new ones. Yes! Like Christmas! Including but not exclusive to these lovely ones. Din! Trade Gothic! Love.

A Love Letter For You

The City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program and Philadelphia native, New York-based artist Stephen Powers have collaborated to create Love Letter, a public art project consisting of a series of 50 rooftop murals from 45th to 63rd streets along the Market Street corridor. The murals, which are best viewed from the Market-Frankford elevated transit line, collectively express a love letter from a guy to a girl, from an artist to his hometown, and from local residents to their West Philadelphia neighborhood.

Architecture Post! Underground Home / Artists Getaways

This underground home is located in the Swiss village of Vals, and a collaboration between the Netherlands architects at SeARCH and Christian Muller Architects.

So, so sick. The presence of all the wood and natural light does a good job at countering the cold emotion you would get from the concrete. Check out more pictures of the home and community:

Saw Fantastic Mr. Fox, which was great! Was a little apprehensive that the Wes Anderson style would be too awkward for a children's tale, but it was pretty seamless - for me viewing it now, that is. I'm not sure if I was a kiddo if I would love it the same. So charming and gorgeous, I'm glad it kept it's Roald Dahl essence (the Boggis Bunce & Bean children rhyme, perfect).

Per usual, soundtrack was ace, starting out with the above track and now it has me all wanting to listen to the Beach Boys when it's winter, but it's warm again, so perhaps I'll let myself enjoy a bit of July in Christmas.

MUJI love & legos

I think at this point I can say MUJI is officially my favorite store, and it's an absolute shame there's not one closer. Simplicity, Beauty, Practicality - just good design.

Now they've paired up with Lego, in an awesome way. The set comes with Lego blocks as well as colored paper and a stapler, which punches Lego-sized connecting holes. Although I did enjoy constructing giant complex spaceships as a child (loved those itty control panels), these are adorable, wish I had them.
